Pu'uhonua o Honaunau - Island of Hawaii
a7R Mk II, 16-35@35mm, ISO 200, 5 bracketed exposures at f/9

"Imagine you had just broken the sacred laws, the kapu, and the only punishment was death.  Your only chance of survival is to elude your pursuers and reach the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, the place of refuge.  The Pu'uhonua protected the kapu breaker, defeated warriors, as well as civilians during the time of battle.  No harm could come to those who reached the boundaries of the place of refuge."  This is now a National Historic Park on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Text above in quotes above adapted from the National Park Service website for this location.

EJ, a real nice image and good description of "Place of Refuge" as it has become to be known in Hawaii. I lived near there for a number of years and walked the land of the park many times. The place truly has a peaceful energy of grace that goes well beyond the meaning of those words. Adjacent to the park is Honaunau bay, also known as "Two Step" for it's natural lava rock two step entrance into the bay. It's a beautiful bay with much marine life & coral and a peaceful quality to it much like the sacred site. I hope you got to snorkel in the bay - it's the best IMO. This is my favorite bay on the Big Island and my favorite land area too. Thanks for sharing this image of my former home area.

I like this image a lot.

Judging from the caption, those must be the fires of hell in the distance.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.

EJ,

Very interesting story and picture. The sky and light are perfect for the mood this picture must have.

Well done!
