It really is important to view shots like this on a dark background. On a white background they look too contrasty. Toning down the contrast a bit would probably help though especially at the far reaches of the water where it blocks up a bit. I think cropping the bottom to just above the lowerr center rock with the stems give the image more balance to my eyes.

An attractive beach! I agree with EJ's suggestions, particularly about the blocked dark areas. Is blending exposures practical in IR?
