City Of Optics - Wetzlar, Germany
a7R, 24-70 @41mm, ISO 100, 1/60, f/7.1

Wetzlar, Germany is the City of Optics.  It is the original home of Leitz, and the current home of, Zeiss, Leica, and Minox.  Here is a shot looking back over the Lahn River and the Old Lahn stone Bridge that has stood since before 1288.  The town was first settled in 5000BC and the church in the background was built in 1230 and some of it's foundation goes back to 897!

Excellent image.

It always fascinates me to see densely populated areas built in perfect harmony with nature.
A great photograph is absorbed by the eyes and stored in the heart.

That would make it the oldest town in Germany, placing it at a time when early civilizations sprung in southeast Asia, central and north Africa, and central America, but not in Europe.

Settlements were common everywhere before the rise of civilization. But they usually didn't last very long and they rarely mark the founding of a town. If they did, the Calico Early Man Site in California would make nearby Barstow the oldest town in the western hemisphere.

Germany's oldest town is Trier - "Treves" in English; both deriving from its latin name "Augustus Treverorum" -  founded in 16 BC by the Romans ( I still remember all the hoopla in 1984 when the town turned 2000).

The actual founding date of Wetzlar is unknown. Towns were established when they received the privilege of collecting taxes on merchandise sold within their limits. In the case of Wetzlar this is believed to have been granted no earlier than the 3rd century, and perhaps as late as the 8th century. The latter would actually make it one of the newcomers among German towns.
