I just read some information about the new Microsoft Surface Book laptop and new Microsoft Surface 4 Pro tablet that are going to be available for sale around the end of October. Both come with Win 10 Pro Screen size is 12.3 in for the surface Pro 4 and 13.5 in for the Surface Book.

Assuming the Book laptop works as advertised, I was wondering if anybody had any thoughts as to how the Surface Book laptop would rank against other similar windows laptops and Mac Air or Mac Pro products or the Surface Pro 4 tablet or other Surface Pro tablets . The proposed pricing for the different models of the Surface Book Laptop looked high to me for the models with more RAM and larger SSDs. (SSDs are available from 128GB to 1TB on the Book.)

Tech specs for the Surface Book:

Pricing with the different options:  With an Intel Core i7, 16BG Ram, 512 GB SSD, the price is $2699.

Pricing for the four Book models from B&H:

Surface Pro 4 info:

Pricing with different options. With an Intel Core i5, 16 GB Ram with a 256 GB SSD, the price is  $1499.  Keyboard is purchased separately (I could not find a price for one.) .

Seems like the big plus is the weight 750 grams or so without keyboard. Minus is single USB port, micro SD slot. Closest you can get in an ultra lite laptop is something like this:

http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops ... 30-BBT1300

When you spec it to match the surface with i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, it adds up to about the same price as the surface pro ($1860) with about double the weight (~1.4 kg) more screen (13.3") and more ports (3 x USB, SD card slot, RGB and HDMI ports). It's available with or without retina resolution screen and with/without touchscreen for the retina res display and the 512 GB SSD is $300 on top of the 256GB option. So in summary price is comparable and choice comes down to do you want a tablet option or not. Anytime you go to ultralight options the price takes an immediate jump it seems.

I love my Surface Pro 3 for traveling!!! I bought the i7, 256 and 8 gigs ram and run Photoshop 2015 with the Nik filters and NX-D no problems. Yes, ok 16 gig ram would be better, but really not necessary unless you are really going to do a lot of editing with it. I mostly just cull and do some minor post processing while travelling and wait till I get home for any real heavy post processing.

I to use the Surface Pro 3 for travel - fully loaded with I-7, 512 GB HD and 8 gig ram - Runs LR CC and PS CC no problem - again as Nancy said do some minor processing - but more along lines of problems working with small screen - I can do some pretty serious editing if I had to but again do most of this on my desktop with 30" monitor - It is having a computer that is barely bigger than a tablet - super on travel
