I have 8 gigs of RAM currently installed in my machine. The four slots are filed, each containing 2gigs. Is it possible to increase the RAM by way of a new upgrade to the current set-up?

go to www.macsales.com and follow the links to the upgrade possibilities for your particular machine.
They cover it all.

I did upgrade my RAM of my old Macs, that is including Macbook Pro 17" model 2008, Macbook Pro 13" 2009 model, Mac Mini 2009 model and last Mac Mini 2012 model.

If i can do that with those, then iMac is also possible to be upgradable.

I have a 2013 iMac and I added RAM without problems (which is saying something, because I am hardly a computer wiz.) I now have 16 GB using 8 and 8 in the first two trays.

OWC http://www.macsales.com/ has everything you need and videos on how to change/add RAM. It will take you 10 minutes.
