When backing up one drive to another (using SATA drives in a drive dock where you plug them in and pop them out) and using something such as Acronis (Is this the most cost effective to use?)....

A) Do you format the drive you are backing up to so it's empty OR

B) Does the software make a perfect image even if things have been both added to and deleted from the drive being backed up?

Yes..I am a backup software virgin.

Acronis can backup or clone, which one are you asking about?

A. If making a standard backup the drive should be fomatted initially, after that all backups made to the drive will either be incremental or overwrite existing files of the same filename. If cloning, whatever is on the source drive will replace what is on the destination drive and no formatting step is needed other than the initial formatting for the system to recognize the drive the first time.

B. Yes for cloning, no for backing up. When cloning, every bit on the drive is repalced every time with an identical bit for bit copy of the source. When backing up, only files that have changed or are new are added, changed or overwritten
