Of late I have been running extremely large memory cards in my cameras and not bothering taking a laptop on photo trips.  It saves the risk of theft and the weight.  I do very carefully check the images on my LCD with my glasses on so I can spot a problem before it is too late.

The other biggie is time and fatigue.  I find after a day of shooting both sunrise and sunset I am often too tired to deal with a laptop and am very prone to making egregious errors when doing so.

What happens if you lose the card? No backup?

While on the topic, what devices would you all recommend for travel backup (assuming a laptop is out of the picture)?

Yes, that is the risk. Likely why my way is not OK for most. I never tell clients to do this, nor do I tell them to shoot in jpg, even though I normally do. I teach RAW and using a laptop. That said, I have never lost a card or had one of my own fail except when I lent one to a client and he fouled it out by trying to download it to an unpowered card reader feeding an iPad.

I do take my Mac Air on longer trips of over 5 days, but I hate leaving stuff at the hotel and am also a little nervous of the car getting broken into.

This one looks interesting if you use SD cards:

For light weight backup in the field, I still like the HyperDrive ColorSpace.

they don't list copying time which means it's probably slow as hell.

Problem with all those devices is they're way overpriced, slow and battery life is horrible.
Do you remember those Epson devices at $700 when you could buy HD for around $150 ?

Here's a simple solution I have used. If you have a camera body with dual memory card slots, set it up to copy to both while shooting, or shoot with only one card and later use the image copy function on the camera body. This way you would have two things to lose. :)

I still use the Hyperdrive colorspace. I put an older ssd in it and it actually is pretty fast. As for battery life It will download a more than a hundred gigs before needing a charge. It travels in a different bag than my cameras and laptop.

That's a good trick. Which model do you have ?
I'm wondering about room inside. Did it have originally 2.5" drive ?
How long would you say, does it take to copy let's say 8GB ?

Doesn't say anything about card to drive copying speed nor battery life which means it's probably lousy.

Mike,

My experience with my Colorspace has been similar to yours.  I can usually download three 32GB cards on battery before running out of juice. Sanho has a separate charger for the batteries used in the Colorspace.  The batteries can be purchased cheaply as generiics and you can carry multiples of them, if you are going to be away from a power outlet.  Replacing batteries is as simple as doing it on a DSLR.

As far as cost, I always find it interesting that many of us will spend thousands of dollars on a new camera body or lens, but skimp on OEM batteries or other accessories.  A Colorspace without hard drive is about $250.  A 1TB drive can be added for as little as $50.  The external charger, if I remember, was about $16.
Add a few batteries and you have a great portable backup for both CF and SD cards for less than $350.

I have enough cards to keep going for a whole day, with two or three bodies.  Backup is usually done at night, or if I go back to lodging or a car during the day.

For me, the biggest issue has been being around to change cards as they complete the copy to my backup devices.  That can sort of cut into my evenings.

Oh yes, I forgot to say that the Colorspace is actually a backup to my backup laptop's internal 2TB and some external 2TB drives.  Never can have too many backups.  Don't forget to store and ship those backups seperately.

Liz

It has a USB power adapter, so any 12V USB adapter will work in a vehicle or a 110 adapter when at home/motel etc. That makes battery life less important.
I don't know if I'm reading the specs correctly, but it says "SD 2.0 up to 25MB/s". "Up to" can mean a lot of things! It says USB 3.0 at up to 5Gb/s. Combined with this, it should be pretty fast:

or this:

http://www.sandisk.com/products/memory- ... one-usb-30

This says 6 hours continuous video streaming or 20 hours standby time on battery:

Didn't see SD 2.0 entry. But still this comes to around 5min per 8GB card assuming top speed which will never happen.
I'd assume speeds half of that so around 10 min and since I use 16GB cards that is 20 min per card.
In most cases it might be enough but I've been in situations when my Epson crap drive was running out of juice in 15 min so if you're not in car or don't want to run your engine just for sake of copying files that's not enough.

This shows speed to HD at 27MB/s and I still think it is crap.
I'm interested in speeds you're getting after you replaced HD with SSD.
I'd think speeds would be better. Did you notice how long it takes to copy full card (whatever card size you're using) ?

I am satisfied with the download speed and battery life on my Hyperdrive Colorspace purchased in 2010 as I recall. I went forfour or five days without recharging the batteries. I downloaded RAW images from 16 GB and 32 GB cards. I did not use the Hyperdrive to view the images and maybe that is why I got good life out of the battery charge. I do admit that I think it is overpriced, but it does what it is supposed to do. My model came with (or I bought it separately?) an auxiliary battery holder that takes AA batteries as I recall. I have never used it, however.

How many cards you downloaded before running out of power ?
