My previous desktop died. Took it to some folks who have always done well in the past. They had to wipe my C drive (a Crucial SSD) clean and then reinstall Windows. They could not reinstall my other programs - including PS CS5.

I have been all around Adobe's website and can not find any info on how to install my previously purchased CS5. And guess what, they have no phone support for CS5.

Sure would appreciate any help or guidance.

The ONLY phone support Adobe now supplies is for the CC

Adobe is doing everything in their power to make using older versions of their software difficult to get help with problems.
All their previous customers now have second class status which means all support is web based for CS6 and earlier versions.
What you have to do is search for PS CS5 - you should be able to find it.
Once on the PS CS5 page click on "Support".
Once on the Support page find a "chat link" and explain the problem and ask for help with the re-install.

It helps if you write up the problem with complete details in Word so you can copy and paste the complete question in the chat, in your initial contact. Because sometimes a glitch occurs and the first attempt ends up in the "ether" that's why having it in Word makes it easy to resubmit the question.

Hi Bruce,
Several questions.
If the computer had a problem and they had to "wipe" the C-drive, what would prevent that from happening again?
Did you not have a backup of the computer that you could restore?

Do you have the original install DVD and the license number? If so wouldn't it be to just put the dvd in and follow the install?

This is a good example for people who want to run such software to move their entire system into a virtual machine. Then backing up the whole OS and the installed programs is as simple as copying a single file to a USB hard drive.

For example, I run windows 7 with CS6 in a virtual machine.

Roger,

What does "I run windows 7 with CS6 in a virtual machine" mean?

Hi Bruce,
Do a google search virtual machine. Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine

These days one can run multiple operating systems simultaneously on the same computer. You choose how much resources (memory and cpu) each machine can get at any time. For example, you can run windows 7 within windows 8. I run windows 7 in linux. When two operating systems are running, they can all see the same disks and one can even cut and paste between windows running in different operating systems.

The long term advantage is that as operating systems change, older software my no longer run. Will CS5 run on windows 10? With a virtual machine, one does not have to worry. Start a virtual machine now (e.g. windows 7), install photoshop CS5 (or whatever). Then when a new operating system comes out with a new computer, or you upgrade an existing computer, simply install the virtual machine software, copy your virtual machine (e.g. windows 7 + CS5) onto the computer, and point the virtual machine software to that file and boot up that "machine").

I use virtualbox: https://www.virtualbox.org/

The other popular virtual machine software is vmware.

I run linux mint 17 and do most of my work in mint, including all my photo file management, web surfing (firefox), email (thunderbird), word processing, spreadsheets, powerpoint (libreoffice), all in linux. Then I run windows in virtualbox under linux and in windows 7 where I run cs6 (and cs5), ptgui and a couple of other windows programs that are not on linux. Linux is also faster at downloading memory cards, which is important when I am on safari or other intense photo shoots. See my series: Linux for Photographers:
