I have a new Apple Macbook Pro loaded with PS CC.  After I work in PS and go to save the image back to my external WD hard drive, I get an error message saying; "cannot save as because write access was not granted.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Is adobe trying to get me to save into a cloud account?  I am new to Apple all the software is loaded correctly and works and the PS license to CC is for the Apple system.  I had previously registered to the CC on my Windows sytem.  Could this be the problem?  I checked in the preferences tab but did not see anything.  Any help is appreciated.

First thing to check:
Do get info on external HD (cmd-I).
Make sure that under Sharing & Permissions "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked on.

Is the external drive formatted NTSF - if it is you won't be able to write to it. It needs to be FAT32 (Mac calls that DOS) or Mac OS Journaled

Not sure how it is formatted. I get the same error message on three separate external drives. How do find out how it is formatted? Will I lose all photos on the drives to reformat to teh FAT32?

Highlight the drive and hit Cmd I - it will tell you under Format.

You can not reformat without losing the data. You will have to copy the data to another drive first, format it and then copy the data back. However if you are following proper computer protocol you should have a complete backup and you can just make sure the backup is up to date, format the drive and copy the data back. if you don't have a backup, you have much bigger problems than this and should take care of that first. It's not a matter of if an HD will fail but a matter of when.

You were right EJ, the format is NTSF. Will go to my backups and copy then reformat. Thanks for the help.

If you are only using it on a Mac, use the Mac OS Journaled format.

I am slowly going exclusively to the Mac but have the bulk on older external drives that were Windows based. Looking for some type of universal format for the hard drives so I can edit on a PC or a Mac. New territory for me so I am struggling a bit. Thanks for all your help.

If you want universal, format the drives on your Mac with the disk utility and select DOS as the format type. This is a form of FAT32 that removes some of the maximum size barriers. It is read/write for both Mac and PC.
