Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada - Loons and More

Take advantage of this unique opportunity to photograph Common Loons, with chicks, at close range, as well as many other species that nest in the area. In an intimate small group setting you can expect to learn the techniques Greg uses to capture captivating images of these birds as they go about courtship, feeding, nesting and brooding their chicks.

Our resort sits right on the main lake where the loons nest and raise their young. All meals, lodging and other expenses as well as un-intimidating and casual photographic instruction is included - all you have to do is get yourself there and we will take care of the rest! Aside from the hands on instruction Greg will also present a series of teaching presentations as well as work closely with each participant on image critiquing and technical instruction specifically targeted to your individual needs.

On the water, we have access to no less than 3 pairs of loons and usually 4-5 chicks and, every morning, 6-12 single loons in front of lodge. Most of the loons are friendly and fairly easy to photograph at close range. Besides the Common Loons on the lakes possible additional subjects include Marsh Wren, Black Tern, Common Yellowthroat, Barrow's Goldeneye with chicks, Red-necked Grebe and other Ducks with chicks. In the area and at the lodge feeders you can expect to see and photograph Stellars Jay, Junco, Pine Siskin, Casins Finch, Grey Jay, Hairy, Downy and Three-toed Woodpecker, Mountain & Black-capped Chickadee, Red-naped Sapsucker, Mountain Bluebird, Yellow-headed Blackbirds, Rufous & Calliope hummingbird and more! There is always a chance we will see a bear or Moose in the area as well.

We will have exclusive use of two dedicated boats specifically set up for photography as well as unlimited access to a number of kayaks, canoes and small motor boats. We are at 4200' elevation and the city, which is only 20 minutes away, is 1100' elevation - this provides a variety of bird species as well as wildflowers for us to photograph! We can usually enjoy great blue sky weather and warm days during time of year.

Here is what some are saying about previous workshops Greg has conducted at Lac Le Jeune:

"Greg works harder than anyone to make sure everything within his control at a workshop comes together for you to have a successful trip! Plus he's a great guy to be around and a patient teacher."

- Catherine D.

"This is my second workshop with Greg. He is knowledgeable, easy going, and patient. The area is beautiful, just wish the weather had been a bit better !"

- Laura D.

"It was great to have Greg as a mentor. He is very forthcoming and does not mind sharing inside info on how to, camera settings, use of equipment and in general to get the most out of what is important at that moment. I will for sure take many more workshops with him."

- Carlotta G.

"Greg is a great guy. Well organized, good instructor. My overall experience was good."

- Adrienne S.

"I really enjoyed the workshop and the locations and I definitely want to return on Greg's loon workshop in the future!"

- Ellen G.

"I want to thank you for being very helpful to me. I appreciated the lesson on flash, and went right away and practiced. My loon babies came out very well, and culminates six years of trying. I just couldn't get close enough from shore. I would recommend you to anyone who wants to travel and get chances for good shots. Thank you more than you know for arranging for our group have the boats to film the loons on the little lake after you left. As you well know word of the hatching got around fast, and without your help I'm quite certain that we would have lost access!"

- Caryl U.

"Just wanted to let you know I thought the trip was fantastic!!!!!! We had a great boat driver that missed out on some shot so others could get them. That is what separates a good tour leader from others."

- Alan Nelson, Montana

"From very close encounters with Loons to nesting Woodpeckers. Throw in a few Hummingbirds, too. This workshop should not be missed! I had a wonderful experience!"

- Neil Solomon, California

"I really like the way you teach, both in-the-field and in the classroom. I greatly appreciated these sessions and feel I benefited significantly from them."

- Lue Newman, Florida

Workshop Testimonials:

"Just back from Tanzania with Greg Downing. What an amazing trip and experience. The wildlife photography was incredible. The guides outstanding. Wonderful memories for a lifetime. Seeing the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet come to life in front of me was the most memorable. In particular, I enjoyed seeing the wildebeest migration and the cheetah hunting."

—-Steven Grad
"Tanzania, Africa Safari"

"Thanks to the both of you (Greg and Alan) for putting on such a good workshop. I think that all the folks regardless of ability level got something out of the workshop. Also, thanks for being so flexible in getting people to the places that they wanted to shoot. Alan thanks for the setups, a cursory look at my photos shows that I have some ones that I will like very much. I know that Judy and I enjoyed ourselves - thanks for the fun workshop!"
