Cover image copyright Scott Elowitz. The photo was taken in late May 2005 from Reeds Beach, located along the Delaware Bay coastline in Middle Township, Cape May County, New Jersey. This area is one of the most productive horseshoe crab spawning areas in the lower Delaware Bay. The Delaware Estuary is the largest staging site in the eastern United States for shorebirds migrating along the Atlantic Flyway. It is also the second largest staging site in North America.
