OCTOBER 2003 Copyright Adam Gibbs, all rights reserved. It is a double exposure taken of Japanese maples at the University of British Columbia Botanical Gardens, B.C., Canada. One of the exposures is in sharp focus while the other is blurred. There are a number of ways to achieve this effect, the most common of which is to double expose onto one frame as he did here. A second method is to take two exposures and then sandwich them together over the light table. Another alternative is to simply take one image and manipulate it in Photoshop. For the first method you have to underexpose each of the exposures, in the second method (sandwich) you will have to over expose both images, and with the last method the world is your oyster, the possibilities are endless. The third option is also the best method if you happen to use a digital camera. The equipment used to make this image include Nikon F4s, 200mm lens, and Velvia.
